Description:  The emphasis of the collection concerns the interplay between orality and writtenness in prophecy and prophetic literature, including various explanations concerning how the primarily oral/aural experience of prophecy (i.e., speaking and hearing oracles) became prophetic literature (e.g., oracular reports, collections of oracles, literature which includes quotations of prophecy, prophetic books). Some of the explanations given remain fairly traditional from the perspective of biblical studies. Drawing an analogy from the wisdom tradition, Crenshaw argues that disciples of the prophets may have preserved the prophetic sayings in an oral tradition that later scribes recorded. Clements argues that the prophet Isaiah wrote a memoir that forms the basis of Isaiah 6-8. Other explanations challenge some of these more common explanations. Culley draws from the study of oral traditions in the Parry--Lord school, especially the work of John Miles Foley, and concludes that an "oral style" continued its influence on the scribal tradition that produced and transmitted Israelite prophetic literature.
