Description: Ben Sira's hymn landed on my desk four years ago and arrested my attention in the course of a general reading o f Hellenistic-Jewish literature. I had been looking for texts to chart that intersection o f cultures, Jewish and Hellenic, within which a remarkable reflection on human nature and social experience had been generated. Now I find myself astonished at the scholarly labors Ben Sira's poem has educed and sustained and at my findings. I had thought to move quickly, from this text to others, through a cultural epoch o f a history o f ideas.
But the text did not yield until I gave it its rightful position at the center o f the intersection I sought to understand. As all the other texts piled up around it on my desk, texts that I discovered formed the framework of Ben Sira's intellectual world, his hymn took its place upon another desk as well—his own. I've imagined his study a bit more tidy than mine, but filled nonetheless with all those things befitting a scholar's workshop. That I hadn't expected. I had wanted to bridge the difference of two thousand years by studied reconstructions of what we've come to call history.
